We took the opportunity to take our three year old grandson to see Disney’s newest PIXAR animated movie, Zootopia, on opening weekend. Our first choice for theaters was sold out for at least two showings; so we then purchased advance tickets online to make sure we could see the movie at our convenience.
Beginning this spring, Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps from Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Zootopia” will be visiting Disneyland Resort, where guests can find them on Hollywood Boulevard at Disney California Adventure park and at Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort during the “Move It! Shake It! Dance & Play It!” Street Party at Magic Kingdom Park. “Zootopia” opens in theaters in 3D on March 4. (©Disney)
An entertaining movie about a city full of anthropomorphic animals that live in a utopian society where they all get along – predator and prey, alike. Except that it seems some are going rogue, so it becomes the job of Officer Judy Hopps to find out what is happening, beginning with the disappearance of local florist, Emmitt Otterton.
But Judy has some personal obstacles to overcome. In a city where anyone can be anything, she struggles to gain the acceptance of the other officers and citizens when she earns a rookie spot on the ZPD (Zootopia Police Department) as the force’s first rabbit police officer. Assigned to Parking Enforcement, she sets her sights high to do her best and soon finds herself dealing with some pretty shady characters in tackling her first big case. The result of all her hard work and naïveté causes extreme tension among the citizens of Zootopia.
There is a lot of comic relief in this movie, especially at the DMV, where the employees are all sloths who move at…the…speed…of…a…sloth; a perfect metaphor for those of us who have had to wait in those unbearable lines. It’s pretty funny when our intrepid little bunny causes a pack of wolves to start howling.
From our experience, this movie needs a slightly older child audience. Our grandson, who at age 2, had no problem sitting through Planes Fire and Rescue, or at 3, saw The Good Dinosaur, had difficulty paying attention to this movie. It didn’t have planes or dinosaurs, so that may have been the issue.
Zootopia is on track to outperform Frozen when it came out in 2013, bringing in over $73 million in the first weekend for the entertainment giant that is Disney. It’s not hard to understand the popularity of this film as it has something for everyone, with a lot of cultural references that are both current and nostalgic.
